What is Mesothelioma?



The word Methothelioma is a common variation of the word Mesothelioma.

This condition is a rare form of cancer that in the majority of cases is caused by exposure to asbestos.

Asbestos is a mineral found in nature that has incredible resistance to heat and chemicals. This mineral is very fiberous and has been woven into clothing starting in the ancient civilizations.

In the human body, there is a lining around all of our organs that protects them. This lining is called the mesothelium. When someone is exposed to asbestos, the cancer that can form will form in this mesothelium lining so that is were the word comes from.

mesothelium (lining) + oma (cancer)= mesothelioma.

The word Mesothelioma is such an uncommon word and difficult to pronouce so it is often referred to as Methothelioma.
